Alpine mountain landscapes, crystal clear lakes and historic cities. Tirol is for those you want to just sit somewhere and admire the views as well as those wanting to earn their turns on touring skis. There is so much beauty to be seen, so let’s dive into 10 of the most spectacular places.
10 spots you must visit when in Tirol
1. Olpererhütte An Insta Famous Bridge
The title photography shows a bridge, that has in the recent years gained fame on social media. It’s right next to a hut and the hike there is fairly easy – but don’t mistake an alpine hike for a stroll in the park. Arrive early or off-season to avoid crowds.
2. Innsbruck Alpine City Vibes
The self claimed capital of the Austrian alps is a vibrant city with the best and most beautiful backyard one (mountain lover soul) could wish vor. It’s home to 30.000+ students and a winter day might start at a lecture and end with the last chair.
3. Nordkette: Outdoor Playground for Everyone
Innsbruck, again. But this time seen high above from the mountain range Nordkette. It’s the perfect melting pot for tourists, hikes, mountain runners, (e-)bikers, downhill bikers, paragliders, yogis, skiers, snowboarders & foodies (more than 6 huts within 0,5-3 hours hiking). It’s also at the border to the Karwendel nature park, the largest one in Austria. Seegrube and Hafelekar are spots up on the mountain that can be reached by cable car. More yoga info here.
4. Plansee Nordic Vibes in the Alps
What looks like a fjord, really just is a beautiful lake close to the border of Germany. A hotspot for photographers, fishermen, hikers and bikers.
5. Brandenberger Ache River
The color of this river is just unreal in summer time. Hike along the river or jump in for a refreshing swim.
6. Großglockner Highest Summit in Austria
Austria’s highest mountain is party in Salzburg, Carinthia and Tirol. The most common way up starts at Kals and is a 2 day alpine tour, which is usually done with a guide.
7. Scenic Flight: Tyrol from Above
Can’t be bothered hiking up a mountain? See them all from above while flying without an engine. Mountain Soaring is run by expert flight instructors who fly self launching motor gliders. A unique and memorable experience!
8. Obernberger See: Mountain Lake Beauty
Close to the Italian border, this lake is a real gem. The hike to the lake (bus stop + parking) takes around 30minutes and is perfect for families. To go around the lake you should plan for an extra hour or 1,5hrs. It’s a unique place at any time of the year!
9. Indian Summer in the Alps
October/November is when the larch trees turn yellow, red and look as if they were on fire. Alpine indian summer vibes can be seen at Stubai valley as well as in the Karwendel (Ahornboden) or Pfundser Tschey in Oberinntal.
10. Unique Accommodation in the Snow
Top your winter experience off with an igloo night high up in the mountains in Kühtai ski resort. The stay includes a nighttime hike, fondue dinner, a bonfire and sauna to warm up before cuddling up in a warm expedition sleeping bag inside an igloo.
